Fillers and Injectables Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that restore or enhance facial volume. Young people have a thick layer of collagen that lies just beneath the surface of their skin, giving that soft, smooth appearance known as a “baby face.”

As the years pass, you lose much of that collagen, leaving your skin without the same level of padding. This allows lines and wrinkles to develop, and it eventually leads to sagging and drooping skin.

Dermal fillers plump the skin and refine facial contouring. They can also create fullness in the lips or cheeks, even beyond what was present during your younger years.

How do I know which dermal fillers are right for me?

There are many different dermal fillers on the market. Many are made from a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a substance your body produces naturally.

Because your body recognizes hyaluronic acid, these fillers are easily integrated into your skin. Over time they’re slowly absorbed and processed through your lymphatic system, but while they’re in place, they can also prompt your body to create new collagen cells, further enhancing facial volume.

Some fillers have a thick, gel-like consistency that creates volume in larger areas of the face like your cheeks. Others are incredibly thin, making them a good option for smaller areas like the sides of your eyes and the tiny lines that form around your lips.

During your consultation, Dr. Trussler evaluates your face, discusses your treatment goals, and directs you toward the filler best suited for your needs.

What is a ‘liquid facelift’?

A “liquid facelift” is a term used to describe a combined treatment approach using both dermal fillers and injectables like Botox®. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, a liquid facelift can do wonders to turn back the hands of time without the risks and recovery time that come with cosmetic surgery.

Botox and other neurotoxin-based treatments work to impede facial muscles from going through their full range of motion. A series of injections prevents these muscles from tugging and pulling the skin into lines and wrinkles while allowing you to create normal facial expressions.

Dermal fillers can smooth out lines, lift sagging jowls and undereye bags, and refine the shape of your lips. Just as no two people have the exact same facial features, no two liquid facelifts are exactly alike.
